A Self Sufficient Life Making Money Online

So I was still working on the new make money online plan, doing some articles and garnering some back links, but I eventually needed a break (okay, so only two articles in; sue me!). Anyway, the break I took was originally going to be like five minutes while I checked out the blog and saw how little much traffic I was getting (actually I was going to check Google Analytics; I know that's what you do, but I always kind of stepladder when checking things and go from the blog, to hubpages, to adsense, and finally Analytics, but this isn't important). After logging in and being take to the dashboard, however, I saw an update to Grizzly's Make Money blog. You know, the one I was all up in arms about two weeks ago? I still think it's a great read, but his particular strategies aren't going to be my focus for a while (though I'm still cranking out hubs and adsense optimizing the few sites I have). Anyway, Grizzly's actually updated several times since I last visited, and one of his posts was titled "Write something I can Link to".

You can read it here. So what's this all about? Well, quite simply, the blog is Grizzly telling people they should right good content to get a link. Content that doesn't absolutely suck, and isn't just good enough to receive a pat on the back either, but content that is genuinely trying to help people first, rather than trying to simply garner traffic for ad clicks. He lists examples, and one such example was a very interested read.

That post, make money online at A Self Sufficient Life, was very interesting and stuck out for several reasons. First of all, let me just say that the authors are AMAZING to have covered so much ground in 4 months. Mr and Mrs. Dirty Boots are currently making a living online. Naturally they're still working every day, and working hard at that, to maintain their internet properties, but I really love the success stories side of the business. Especially because I seriously doubt I'll ever pursue anything more insane than this.

The main methods they focus on are the same as Grizzly's (hey, if it ain't broke, don't fix it, right?) but they do a great job of explaining things. Not that Grizzly doesn't, but his site is scattered and half the useful stuff is in comments. The Dirty Boots' post is singular and therefore, easy to refer back to. It's not as comprehensive, but if you've got a basic grasp of making money online then it won't be something you need to go back to. And I think most people that find it will have found it through Grizzly's site at least for now, so the technicalities and extras that you might expect don't really matter.

Another reason I find this post great, and worth reading, is because it kind of reminds me of my site. Well, if this site were self hosted with about 10x better writing, keyword targeting, and overall on page optimization. I do want to see how far I can get this thing up the SERPs by next year (I'm officially setting the date at September 1st) , when I hope to be making a living similar to the Dirty Boots (at least) online, but for now, you'd need to Google "make money online broke affiliate" for it (hey, there are almost half a million competing pages for that term, so I'm still proud of it!). But anyway, it reminds me of my blog because it kind of covers things simply without shying away from affiliate links or placing them in the post without informing people of them.

So to Mr. and Mrs. Dirty Boots, if you ever read this, thanks for your post! Even though it sidetracked me a whole hour and half now....

In Other News

This is completely unrelated to the topic but I do have some updates on my last post, the new money making idea. So basically last post I tossed out my current strategies and focus, and so far, I haven't been able to keep up even close to as well. Sunday was when I started my keyword research, and I worked a solid 10 hours just researching keywords and finding good ones. However, my plan to get about 20 niches well researched was thrown off while I was reading the WA forums. The more I thought about my plan, the less likely it seemed that I would be able to do it. At least not in the timetable I'd set up. Which is why I'm updating my timeline and goals.

Instead of doing 2 niches per week, I'm going to do 1 niche per 2 weeks. 14 days worth of linkbuilding, even at the minimum 2 articles per day (which is laughable if I really devote myself; can get 2 approximately 400 word articles done in under an hour) that would still be 28 pages. Probably all of them would direct link to the product as well; I think I figured out how to domain forward so I can use ezine for a direct link to a clickbank product. So far I've got 4 articles up for my first niche. Yes. Pathetic.

To be fair, I only actually wasted one day. To continue with what's been going on... Sunday I wrapped up things earlier than I had anticipated because Saturday, after I had formulated my new ultra "spread shot targeting" plan of getting 20 niches done within 4 weeks (don't worry, I was thinking a little crazily now that I look back at it) I was about to collapse at 3 in the morning, and then I got back up at 9:00 AM on Sunday. The tiredness hit me at 8:00 and I stumbled to bed, figuring I'd cover lost ground Monday.

Monday was great for the first few hours. I actually overslept till about 12:00 (my body's insane with missing sleep and overcompensating for it, that's why I try not to miss it, but meh), but then I got to work after a leakfast (what you normal make money onliners may call "brunch") I only got about 3 hours of work in before they cut off my power. Fail.

So all day Monday I had no power (I don't pay the bills; that's my mother) and by the time my mother got home to pay for the power, it was too late (even though the company said they could still reconnect it the first time we called.. Oh well, what can you do) and we had to wait until Tuesday before they could get a truck out to repair.

There's a lot you'll need to know about me to really get why Tuesday up until noon was wasted- the power company started reconnections at 8:00, but it was difficult for me to get in touch with them- we have no land line and I had no cell phone. So I ended up going to a payphone and ordering the reconnection. They still had to come out and pick up the check, which took 2 hours. I have no idea where they were coming from, but after this ordeal, I was just plain tired. I wasn't sleepy tired, and instead of collapsing in bed I goofed around on the internet. I did some research, and tried to edit a blog, but my head just wasn't in it, and I knew it's better to take a break and relax than try and pump out content if I couldn't focus on making money online.

The end result is that now I'm essentially down to 11 days to pull together my first niche which I'm finding out is fairly competitive. I figure ten articles per day would mean I'd have 110 articles pretty well backlinked between each other and all pointing to the clickbank merchant too. That's right. The second part of this update is that I'm going to scrap my sophisticated backlinking; mostly because of a guy around my age (well, 3 years younger than me; he's 16) at the Wealthy Affiliate forums posting his success (he started two months ago and just had his first $2000 month, I think). Apparently he just directly back links with his articles as well, putting in links to his landing page and the merchant on the same articles. Since it seems to be working for him, I figure I'd give it a shot too instead of over complicating this make money online thing like I usually do.

Well, I'll keep updating with my progress.

Thank you Mr. and Mrs. Dirty Boots again, as your post was great (if you ever read this)!

  1. I read it. Tiptopcat pointed me here via a comment on the article. Thanks for the link.

I am sure you can get to earning some really good money, it is just a matter of sticking with it. This is the main thing I have learnt. Those that stay the course make the cash.

I am also really discovering how well I can use sites that we started before we really knew what we were doing. They are good trusted sites by google but we never made money with them as we did things all wrong.

There is nothing wrong with totally renaming a site and taking it in a different direction. I think this is why a few flagship blogs are important. In a month I have totally changed the direction of a site and now it makes at least $10 a dollar adsense and the traffic doubled.

Keep up the blog and a few others and you will find, as I am now, that you can write about anything and get a high ranking. My main niche for one site now seems to rank for whatever I write and I am going to ramp it up big time. It sounds like you are serious about this business and you WILL make lots of cash if you stick with it.

    All the best

    David
